Disaster memories on the agenda
A steam engine derailed in the yard at Highbridge rail station during the early 1900s.
A steam engine derailed in the yard at Highbridge rail station during the early 1900s.

A RAILWAY disaster from the past is making the news almost a century after the event as part of the Weekly Memories special feature looking back into the past.

A picture, provided by the Highbridge History Project, from June 20, 1909 shows the Highbridge rail crash with crowds of people looking on at the tragedy in horror.

No doubt many will have heard of the smash, and one or two of our readers may even recall the incident - please get in touch and share your experiences with us, we always love to hear from you.

Another trip into the past pictures a steam train, which derailed in the yard at the Burnham and Highbridge train station during the early part of the 20th century.

The image, again given to us by the Highbridge History Project, shows workmen at the station presumably attempting to find out how best to deal with the situation.

Our final journey through time pictures the Goods Yard at the railway station - maybe some of our readers used to work there, or know others who did.

Even if you just want to contact us and talk about your own personal memories and mull over how things have changed since these days, fell free to drop us a line.

To get in touch with the Weekly Memories, or submit your vintage snaps, write to: Weekly Memories, Burnham and Highbridge Weekly News, Royal Clarence House, High Street, Bridgwater, Somerset, TA6 3AT, or email: newsdesk@burnhamnews.co.uk.
