Coronation crowds from three different decades

Woman and children from Burnham Road enjoy a tea party to celebrate the crowning of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.

CORONATION celebrations brought crowds onto the streets of Burnham and Highbridge during the 20th Century, with flags, bunting and balloons used to demonstrate patriotic joy.

Archive pictures from the Highbridge History Project allow us to delve back through the decades to look at how three different coronations were greeted.

Our first fascinating photograph shows a crowd assembled Market Square in Highbridge on the coronation day of King George V in 1911.

The packed crowd show the more formal royal celebrations of the past, with suits for the men and long dresses for the women, arriving by horse and trap.

In 1937, following the controversial abdication of King Edward VIII in 1936, King George VI unexpectedly took to the throne - sparking patriotic festivities all across the UK.

Another Highbridge History Project picture shows celebrations on May 12, 1937 at the Clyce in Highbridge for the coronation, with woman and children holding Union Jacks.

Bunting lines the street as the residents pose for the picture, most wearing caps and coats, signalling a chilly May day.

Finally, a photograph shows coronation cheers from folks in Burnham Road, Highbridge, when current monarch Elizabeth II was crowned queen in 1953.

The picture shows a group of woman and children celebrating at a party - with the union jack flag flying proudly at the back.

Party hats, cups of tea and balloons take centre stage in the party picture, showing the jovial nature of the celebrations.

Do you recognise yourself or anyone you know in the pictures? Do you have any old photographs the Weekly News may be interested in publishing? How do you think a coronation would be celebrated today?
