Back to school for the Weekly Memories
Miss Stradling's class of pupils sip on milk as they pose for a picture at St John's School
Miss Stradling's class of pupils sip on milk as they pose for a picture at St John's School

IT'S back to class this week for the Weekly memories, with three snapshots from St John's School - formerly known as Highbridge School.

The photographs, provided by the Highbridge History Project, give different perspectives on what life was like for youngsters growing up in education during the 20th Century.

The first photograph has no date attached, but shows contented children posing with glasses of milk in class. The smart non-uniformed pupils sit at large wooden desks, on uncomfortable looking flat benches.

Paintings fill the wall as teacher, Miss Stradling, stands at the back of the class in a long, almost Victorian like dress.

Is this your memory of the school?

Our second snap is a class photograph from 1929 at the school, showing pupils attentively sitting in rows with their teacher, Miss Knight, standing behind.

The old-fashioned nature of the desks betrays the age of the picture, as youngsters with textbooks open are split into separate boy and girl groups.

Do you recognise any faces in the picture? Perhaps Miss Knight taught you?

The final photograph comes from 1982 and shows St John's netball team from 1982. The side are showing off their awards after presumably shooting to success in a schools competition.

The young sports stars are named as Lisa Sansom, Kate Jones, Karen Woodland, Joanne Wharton, Joanne Foster, Zoe Picthall, Emma Mansfield, Joanna Cook, Allison Hay and Tanya Porter.

Do you recognise yourself in the pictures? Do you have any other photographic memories you wish to share?
