Double delight for Burnbridge girl footballers
Girls' Football: Frome U-14 3, Burnbridge Wanderers 5
BURNBRIDGE Girls added the cup to their league title with this away victory over Frome in midweek.
They were on fire from the start, with Leanne defending well and Abbie making a great save. From a Frome throw, Abbie's long kick fell at Sophie's feet and she hammered the ball home.
Naomi made some fine clearances and Sophie ran down the wing, but shot wide. Another long kick from Abbie hit a Frome player and went into the net, then Sophie made it 3-0 from a precise pass by Devon.
In the second half, Burnbridge started to tire and Frome went close three times before scoring. From the restart, Leanne made a great run and her hard shot made it 4-1.
Frome pulled another goal back as Burnbridge slowed, then got it back to 4-3. This woke up Burnbridge again and in the last five minutes, a Farren throw just caught the keeper's gloves and went into the net for the fifth goal.
Burnbridge's triumphs in both league and cup were reward for all their hard work.
Last weekend, they played in the Bishops Lydeard, won six matches, drew one and did not concede a goal to win the event. This week is the league tournament, which they have won two years in a row.
Burnbridge are looking for new players for next season. They have to be years eight or nine in school at the moment. The team train at King Alfred School (7-8.30pm) on Monday nights. Come down and give it a try or phone Tina on 07814-451721.
