Burnham away victory is a real team effort

Somerset League Div Two: Fitzhead (7) 110 lost to Burnham (35) 111-2 by 8 wkts

BURNHAM had a comfortable win at Fitzhead on a sunny Saturday.

Captain Pete Harris asked the home side to bat first on a pitch which gave some help to the bowlers and Fitzhead were in trouble from the start, losing their first two wickets in the second and third overs.

Hendy (1) fell to a smart slip catch by Glen Gaylard and Greenway (0) edged Jim Birkett to keeper Graeme Batt. Hannaford and Cherry added 15 before Cherry (7) played on to Birkett via bat and pad. Wicket continued to fall at regular intervals as sharp fielding kept things tight.

T Baycock fell to a catch by Andy Birkett and R Bellringer was caught close in by Jim Bloodworth. With the score 61-5 in the 19th over, Burnham were well on top. The sixth wicket fell at 62 when Hannaford, the only batsman to look comfortable, who had played an array of shots all round the wicket, was bowled by Brian Brogden for 43, which included a six and 7 fours.

The lower order of Bellamy, who was caught on the boundary by Sam Walker, Barry (run out) and S Bellringer (top edge to Gaylard), all added useful runs but the bowlers were always in control.

The innings ended at 110 when Yeoell became Brogden's fourth victim. He was the most successful of Burnham's bowlers with 4-23 but the others bowled their spells tidily and economically.

With the innings ending before four o'clock and the tea-ladies still working hard, Burnham started their innings facing seven overs before the break.

Gaylard and Bloodworth negotiated this spell safely. Both looked in good form, dealing severely with anything loose and putting on 53 for the first wicket in 12 overs. Gaylard (27) was the first to go, caught at the wicket having hit a six and 4 fours.

Bloodworth and Andy Smith took Burnham to within sight of victory when, at 97, a smart piece of stumping saw the end of Bloodworth for 47 (1 six, 7 fours). Walker and Smith and they saw Burnham home in the 27th over at just 6.10pm.

This was a good, all-round performance in which everyone played a part, particularly in the field. Let's see if they can repeat the performance away at Castle Cary on Saturday.

The club are always looking to recruit new members and to help practice and training. They have invested in extra nets and equipment at the BASC ground. All interested are welcome to go along.
