Last-gasp titles for Tryers and Crown Criminals
TRYERS won the second-division championship in the Highbridge & District Skittles League after they beat title rivals Sleepers by 19 pins at Ritz Social Club in a tense match.
Sleepers led by ten after two hands, but Tryers took control on the sixth to lead by 20, with their hero Tony Mansfield, who scored 88.
Having won Division Three in their first season last year, Tryers added to their collection of silverware, while Sleepers had to settle for the runners-up spot.
White Rebels and Bellends will play off for the third promotion spot. Rebels saved their best form of the season for the last match, scoring 568 at the Somerset & Dorset to win by 81 against Trainers, with no less than five players in the 70s. An opening hand of 102 set the tone for the winners.
Bellends beat stablemates The Poachers by seven at the Oaktree to finish joint third. Nobby's One fell two points short after having lost by 20 to Juniors at the Lighthouse Inn. Ollie Barnes scored 90 at Pawlett Pavilion for Rafascals as they defeated Bobbetts Burntouts by 43.
At the bottom of Division Two, Accrington Stanley avoided the drop with a 16-pin defeat of home team Coopers Arms, who are relegated.
In Division Three, Crown Criminals won the title by defeating nearest rivals Alleycats by 29 at the Crown Inn. Criminals have become champions in only their second season, while Alleycats are runners-up.
Bombardiers are promoted in third spot after they defeated Coopermen by 13 at the Bridge. Wanderers suffered a heartache defeat at Pawlett Legion, going down by 14 to Legionaires, which cost them promotion.
First-division champions Bombers finished on an unprecedented points total of 55 after they had trounced the Outcasts by 71 at the Bridge. Steamers, who finished a creditable second, ended with a 32-pin defeat of Odds and Ends at Highbridge Social Club.
The Lads beat Lighthouse Boys by 15 at the Lighthouse Inn and if they win their remaining match, will finish fourth, behind Shunters. Cowboys finished strongly, making it ten wins in their last 12 matches as they ended the season with a 16-pin victory over relegated Railway Burtle at the Tom Mogg Inn. Burtle lost their last nine matches. John Burrows scored 71 for Railway and Brian Gooding 74 for Cowboys.
