The 2016 Gannett Foundation Fund grants scheme is now accepting nominations

SOMERSET charities are being urged to submit applications for grants from the Gannett Foundation Fund.

The Gannett Foundation Fund, run on behalf of Newsquest, publisher of the County Gazette, Bridgwater Mercury, Chard and Ilminster News, Burnham and Highbridge Weekly News and the Mid Devon Star, is accepting applications for funding from registered charities across the county.

This year, while the scheme is happy to receive applications from all charities, we are particularly keen to hear from groups working in rural communities.

County Gazette editor, Paul Jones, said: "The Gannett Foundation Fund is a great opportunity for charity projects in Somerset to receive some much-needed funding.

"With a theme this year focussing on schemes in rural communities, we hope to hear from many of those in the county carrying out such valuable work to support the community and I look forward to reading the applications."

Over the past decade, the Gannett Foundation has made grants totalling nearly £4 million.

"The fund values practical and creative projects that bring lasting benefits to the communities and neighbourhoods," Paul added.

"That includes schemes for neighbourhood improvement and local problem-solving, economic development, youth development, education and cultural enrichment, care of the elderly or infirm, help for the disadvantaged or disabled, and environmental conservation."

As part of last year's scheme, St Mary Magdalene Church in Taunton received a pledge of £5,000 from the fund to complete work to replace the church bells.

The closing date for applications is October 14, with trustees of the foundation meeting in November to consider the nominations.

Unfortunately, the fund is not able to make grants to any group not registered as a charity.
