YOUNG people in Somerset are being given the chance to get expert careers advice at an event this autumn.
Skills Somerset will demonstrate a range of career sectors while experts from colleges, employers, learning providers and career industries will be on hand to give relevant and realistic advice.
Nina Hurst-Jones, events manager for organisers Prospects Events, said: "Young people are always surprised at the careers on offer that either they never knew existed or had not considered.
“Hands-on activities are a great way to give young people a real taste of what they are all about, whatever their ambition or ability.
“It may be that using some photography equipment inspires you to a life behind the lens, helping to build a brick wall encourages you to build a career in construction, watching a cookery demonstration gets your creative juices flowing or identifying objects under a microscope leads you to make a scientific career choice. “The great thing about Skills Somerset is that you can try out all these different activities and speak to real people doing these real jobs so you get all the information you need to make the right decision and have plenty of fun as you go along.”
Companies such as BAE Systems, the UK Hydrographic Office, Hair Academy South West, Somerset Care, Mulberry Company (Design) Ltd and the Western Ambulance Service NHS Trust are just a handful of organisations already committed.
The event is sponsored by Somerset County Council, the Learning and Skills Council and Connexions Somerset and takes place at the new Junction 24 venue located just off the M5 on November 18 and 19.
Organisations wishing to take part or schools and colleges wishing to bring students to visit can get details at www.skillssomerset.co.uk or by calling Sue Bridges on 01823-362800.
