MORE than 50 people have already been arrested at Glastonbury Festival after Avon and Somerset police teamed up with festival security for the first time. Offences include possession of drugs and theft, with the majority being drug related.

Yesterday afternoon police stopped and searched a white van on its way to the festival, and seven people were discovered in the back of the vehicle, and two were arrested for drugs offences.

Ted Grabowski, of the force, who located the van, said: “We will be relentless in combating all crime at Glastonbury. Offences will not be tolerated on site and anyone who commits an offence can expect to be treated in the same was as those who commit offences on the street.”

Similar initiatives are continuing over the weekend to reduce crime levels and police say they aim to make Glastonbury 2009 the safest yet.

Officers say the rate of thefts from tents has already decreased by over 50%, with 115 thefts reported at this time last year compared 48 this year.
