The Weeknd urged fans to their feet and leapt around the stage as he headlined the fifth night of the Apple Music Festival in London.

The Toronto-born singer played music from his new album as well as old favourites at the Roundhouse in Chalk Farm, Camden.

The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, called up to the gallery: “I know I did not come to London for seated audiences. I came here for a crazy crowd because I love London so much.”

The singer-songwriter ran on to the stage after a 60-second countdown to open the performance with songs from his new album, Beauty Behind The Madness – starting with Prisoner, originally a duet with Lana Del Ray, followed by Losers and Tell Your Friends.

The 25-year-old singer released his second studio album on August 28. The album has more of a pop sound than his previous album, 2013′s Kiss Land, or his three 2011 mix tapes known as the Balloons Trilogy.

But he later performed some of his older songs, finishing off with with an encore of two of his first hits, High For This and Wicked Games.

The Weeknd also performed his song Earned It, which was used as the lead single from the soundtrack of the film Fifty Shades of Grey. Two singles from his new album, Can’t Feel My Face and The Hills, reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

Responding to a fan who yelled “I love you” during the performance, he quipped: “I love you too baby, where are you?” – causing nearby audience members to start screaming.

Following his appearance at the Apple festival – the rebrand of the iTunes Festival – The Weeknd will play a series of concerts in the US before officially starting his North American tour, The Madness, in November. Still to play at the Festival in the coming week are The Chemical Brothers, Disclosure, Pharrell Williams, Mumford & Sons, Florence And The Machine.
