The trusty chocolate digestive has been named best biscuit in the Comic Relief World Cup of Biscuits.

It was a tough competition, but the dunkable delight beat the chocolate finger to the top of the cookie jar in a public vote organised by comedian Richard Osman.

The Pointless star dragged out the suspense by announcing the winners of each biscuit heat through the BBC Red Nose Day programme on Friday night.

Jaffa cakes reached the quarter-finals after a heated debate about whether the chocolate orange snack should be in the running at all.

Some 1.6 million votes were cast during the competition – held via Twitter poles, which saw the top eight were whittled down from 32.

The World Cup of Biscuits follows on from Osman’s similar campaigns for crisps and chocolate last year.
