Ricky Martin has said that although he meets plenty of eligible men, he is picky about taking things further with any of them because of his children.

The singer, who is making a comeback after four years away from the limelight, has six-year-old twins Matteo and Valentino, and is now a single father after splitting with partner Carlos Gonzalez Abello.

He told The Sun: “I am single now after seven years. I meet people. I’m fine. I meet very handsome men. I like to have a conversation, looking into someone’s eyes and finding out their sense of humour. I’m not saying you have to be an Adonis, but you have to connect.

“We’re all men. It’s in our DNA to go for it. But I have two boys and I cannot bring different men every day into my house.”

He continued of his ex: “He comes to see the kids. There was a year of silence, but now we’re buddies. I try to keep my life very civilised, that’s what I need for the wellbeing of my children.”

Talking about being a single dad, he said: “The first year as a single father with twins was insanity. I had eye bags down to my knees, but it was the most beautiful year of my life.

“There is a mission in life that I didn’t know I had, I needed to be a father. When you have your child in your arms, everything feels in place.”

Ricky, 43, had his twins to a surrogate and said: “I am only starting. I want a bigger family. Let’s see what happens next year. I’m also seeing the possibility of adopting. But in some countries as a single man it’s kind of difficult, if not impossible. But it’s worth a try.”

He said of coming out when his children arrived: “It was all about the acceptance process, looking at the mirror and telling myself, ‘You’re a great person’.

“It was embracing my identity and being happy with who I am. For me, life got 10,000 times better when I was able to walk in front of the camera and be myself.”
