Jessica Chastain has revealed Interstellar is more than just a space odyssey - it's about fatherhood.

The actress plays the daughter of a space explorer, played by Matthew McConaughey, in Christopher Nolan's highly-anticipated film, and revealed she thought father-of-four Christopher had been inspired by his own experiences of parenting.

Jessica, who wore a backless black gown with lace embellishment to the Los Angeles premiere of the film, said: "It's about a father and his daughter. It's about the powerful bonds of love.

"Chris and Matthew are both fathers and I think, yes of course there's an incredible space action adventure, visually stunning film, but the heart of it is about the bonds of love. And I think Chris being a father was a very personal story for him.

"I know he's a visionary, I don't think he's ever made a bad film. I'm so grateful to be part of this, this is something that in 20 years I'll be able to look back and smile and say, 'I was in Interstellar'."

British director Christopher has kept the film tightly under wraps for years, and Anne Hathaway, who also plays a space traveller, was staying tight-lipped about the story.

Asked to reveal the film's highlights, Anne said: "I'll give too much away! But I can tell you that you're going to love it. I think audiences are going to love it. There's actually more than one highlight of the movie - that's good."

Interstellar is released in London on November 4 and goes on nationwide release on November 7.
