THE words “Celtic punk” may sit in the ears like chalk and cheese, but the music fits perfectly, according to a comedian turned punk star heading to Bridgwater on Thursday.
Young Ones star Adrian Edmondson and his band The Bad Shepherds will be performing a set of classic punk and new wave songs with a Celtic feel at The Palace.
When punk arrived in the late 70s, the songs of The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Jam and The Stranglers became the soundtrack to Adrian's teenage life.
Like a lot of people in his generation, he was fond of playing these songs to himself at home on his acoustic guitar.
Thirty years later - and feeling Pretty Vacant after a boozy pre-Christmas lunch - Adrian 'accidentally' bought a mandolin.
Surprised to see it sitting there in his kitchen the following morning he picked it up, worked out a few chords, and started playing the same punk songs with a mandolin accompaniment - he knew he was on to something.
Now with his brilliant folk musicians The Bad Shepherds, he has recorded an album, 'Yan, Tyan, Tethera, Methera!' - which means 'One, Two, Three, Four!' in an ancient Cumbrian dialect - and is ready for a packed tour and a chance to have some real fun.
Doors open at 8pm. Tickets are £14 in advance, subject to a booking fee, from the box office on 08712-200260.
