Coast Road signatures rocket
 |
| Oliver Nagiel, who fractured his skull in an accident along the Coast Road, holds up a giant A Safer Coast Road petition form, with his dad John, Weekly News reporter James Beal and Berrow parish councillors. |
THE Weekly News' A Safer Coast Road campaign took to the streets on Sunday with a determined group of Berrow parish councillors - as the number of signatures on our petition rocketed past 250.
Weekly News reporter James Beal joined council clerk Lynn Smith, chairman of the council Jenny Bentley, Cllr Peter Dunwell, Cllr Carol Dyer and Cllr Jackie Baines to gather support for our campaign where it matters most - Berrow's Coast Road.
Our campaign urges Somerset County Council to make improvements to a dangerous stretch of the highway - including a cycle path and footpath, a crossing for schoolchildren and traffic calming measures.
Parish council officials met up with youngster Oliver Nagiel, who as reported in the Weekly News, was knocked off his bike along the road back in March.
The group then walked up and down Coast Road, collecting more than 100 signatures and receiving great public backing for the movement.
The Weekly News now hopes to present the list of signatures to County Hall in Taunton next week.
And we want you to add your name to the growing list of people calling for change.
You can either fill in our petition form printed here or get an online version from our website, www.burnhamandhighbridgeweeklynews.co.uk
*WEEKLY News reporter James Beal gives a first-hand account of walking up and down the Berrow stretch of Coast Road - and reasons why YOU should sign our petition.
THE paved stretch of Coast Road in Berrow comes to an abrupt end just after you pass the village church, next to the scenic golf course.
The route, one of the region's busiest tourist roads ferrying visitors from Burnham up to Brean and Weston, was already packed with traffic, despite it not being the height of summer.
I felt increasingly uneasy as we approached the stretch with no pavement, as cars, lorries and caravans whizzed past us.
That uneasiness turned to something approaching fear as we attempted to navigate down the busy road, as vehicles, hampered by the narrowness of the road, were forced to swerve past us.
If two big vehicles met it was impossible for them to pass by our group, meaning a queue of traffic continually snaking down the road behind us.
The walk was a reminder of just why the Weekly News is fighting to get changes to the treacherous road.
Despite it not yet being summer, we passed at least TEN people cycling and walking down Coast Road.
Heavily weighted caravans and lorries had to pass by tourists, including young children, cycling along the road - and came within inches of knocking them off and leaving them seriously injured.
The Weekly News again renews its calls for Somerset County Council to improve Coast Road - before it is too late
