STAFF and students at King Alfred School in Highbridge are celebrating a positive OFSTED report... and have pledged to work hard to make the facility officially outstanding.

The secondary school, which has more than 1,300 pupils, has been graded ‘good’ while pupils’ behaviour was described as ‘excellent’ by inspectors.

Head teacher Andrew Owen said: “I’m delighted that OFSTED has recognised the huge improvements we’ve made.

“I’m particularly delighted that OFSTED fully recognised the behaviour and positive attitudes of our students.

“I congratulate all members of the school community, especially our students, parents, staff and governors, who have contributed to the school’s success over recent years.

“We’re all very proud of this recognition by OFSTED and the next stop for us is ‘outstanding’.”

Inspectors said in the report: “Pupils are proud of their school. They show great respect to one another and to adults.

“Their behaviour is exemplary in lessons and around the school, and they feel safe.”

Students were also described as courteous, ready to learn, polite, caring and friendly.

Inspectors noted:

  • Pupils’ achievement has improved rapidly since the previous inspection and is now good.
  • GCSE results are good because of good teaching.
  • The head teacher, senior leadership team and governors have been strongly focused on improving the school, and through their drive and ambition have been successful, particularly in improving teaching and pupils’ achievement
  • The sixth form is improving rapidly and is now good. It provides a wider range of courses which meet the needs of its students.
