AN extra £250,000 is to be spent on new library books in Somerset.

The county council, which had to back down from a library closure programme earlier this year after a High Court challenge, pledged the money this week.

It is also considering setting up a series of ‘community hubs’ where libraries share space with other public services.

The council’s libraries chief, Cllr David Hall, said: “I believe the strategy will save money and create a library service fit for the future.

“The service is important, and I fully support the proposal to invest an extra £250,000 into the book fund.”

SCC should have done this in the first place instead of trying to shut the libraries.They spent a small fortune on a legal fees which could have been spent on books.

This is grossly misleading. Somerset County Council may be planning to spend £250,000 more on books but, at the same time, they are planning to slash £609,000 from the overall libraries budget. Nothing more than smoke and mirrors. www.mikerigby.org

More than that, it's £250k on what was a very low number compared to other authorities. Only a few years ago it was a lot more, it has been reduced in recent years, and this doesn't bring it back to previous levels.
