AN EX-TOURISM boss in Burnham has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours List.

Bob Nicholson, who lives along the South Esplanade, was presented with the accolade for his work as Chairman of the Somerset Tourism Association.

He stepped down from the post last year after a 25 year run which saw Sedgemoor Tourism Association grow to include the whole of Somerset.

Bob told the Weekly News: “Receiving the award was a great surprise. It highlighted the fact that Somerset Tourism has been recognised for its great work.

“Tourism is crucial to providing over a £billion of income to the county annually and sustains in excess of 30,000 jobs.

“The Brean strip alone has become one of the largest caravan and camping areas, attracting 30,000 visitors a week during peak season.”

Bob has been a member of Burnham summer carnival committee, a comedian, a DJ, head of entertainment at the Holimarine holiday park, president of the chamber of trade and more.
