COLLEGE students in Sedgemoor are being challenged to think of exciting ways to use superfast broadband.

Somerset County Council says the service is on its way and has asked students to think up plans for homes and businesses through an ‘Ideas Challenge’.

Cllr David Hall, Cabinet Member responsible for the Superfast Broadband programme, said: “All types of businesses in all sectors of Somerset’s economy stand to gain from making use of the exciting new Superfast Broadband infrastructure.

“There should be no limit to the ideas put forward. This challenge presents a perfect opportunity for innovative and imaginative thinking from our young business people of tomorrow.”

Prizes up for grabs include a new Toshiba laptop (provided by IBM and South West One and VIP trips to IBM software labs and Plymouth University to see real robots and the total immersive theatre.

The deadline for submitting ideas is the end of February 2013, with judging taking place in March 2013. The winners will be announced shortly after.

The ‘Ideas Challenge’ was launched by the Open Innovation project, a part EU (Interreg IVB) funded initiative which includes Somerset County Council, Plymouth University and the Somerset Chamber of Commerce.
