A CAMPAIGN has begun to tackle the trade in illegal tobacco in Somerset.

Authorities say more than £1.8billion is lost every year to the trade in the UK.

County public health chief Stewart Brock said: “Illegal tobacco enables young people to buy cheaply when otherwise it would often be too expensive to consider.

“The illegal trade undermines our fight against cancer, lung and cardio-vascular diseases, which kill almost 900 people a year in Somerset.”

Events promoting the campaign will be staged across the county next month.
