A PENSIONER has helped raise £252 for the Beacon Centre at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, by asking for donations instead of presents at his 65th birthday bash.

Dave Hicks held the party, which involved a 60s and 70s disco, at the Morlands Social Club in Highbridge on Saturday night.

As reported, the party had earlier sparked controversy because the club had asked for permission to temporarily extend its licence until 3am, a bid which was turned down by Sedgemoor District Council's licensing panel following police concerns.

However, Bridgitte Whitcombe, the club's licensee who asked for the later opening hours, said: “It was a brilliant night and Dave really enjoyed it.

“There was no trouble at all, as I knew there wouldn't be.

“It was a full house and it was all worth it.”
