OFFICIALS at Somerset County Council cannot say for sure whether horsemeat has been fed to children.

The council has been testing meals served up in schools and is awaiting the findings.

A County Hall spokesman said an investigation had been launched, but it had not heard yet if meat was contaminated because of a backlog with the test results.

Separately, the Food Standards Agency said six carcasses slaughtered in Somerset were contaminated with the anti-inflammatory drug bute and “may have entered the food chain”.

The FSA said the carcasses were sent to France, and it is currently working with the French authorities.

If only the county council had their own food laboratory they would not have to wait to see if the school meals where safe !!!!!!...... Alas the council have taken the decision to close down their laboratory from the 1st April to save money..and no doubt they are even paying more for a slower service.... How short sighted......well done .....roll on the next food scare
