A VET who always goes the extra mile and describes his job as “a way of life” is in the running for two industry awards.

Scott Parry, from Bridge Veterinary Surgery, in Highbridge, has been shortlisted for the Vet Nurse prize at the Ceva Animal Welfare Awards.

He and the rest of the Bridge team have also been nominated in the Vet Practice of the Year category at the Petplan Veterinary Awards, which are due to be announced on Thursday.

Scott was nominated for animal vaccine manufacturer Ceva's awards by Rita Hinton, North Somerset branch secretary for the RSPCA, for the hard work he and wife Ann carry out looking after animals at the charity's Brent Knoll centre.

Scott and Ann recently vaccinated more than 50 dogs following an outbreak of Parvo Virus at a travellers' site, and he also spends hours of his own time at the RSPCA centre helping the rehabilitation of dogs, many of which have been severely traumatised after being mistreated by their owners.

Scott also fosters ferrets, has adopted animals from the RSPCA, and has helped raise money for agility equipment for dogs.

He said: “Running our practice and helping the RSPCA is not just a job to me and Ann but a way of life. I love what I do and it's great that at the same time I can make a difference by improving the welfare and health of pets in need.”

The winners will be announced next month - with prizes ranging from spa weekends to European city breaks.

The awards run by insurer Petplan will be announced tonight at Birmingham Town Hall, and Bridge Veterinary Practice was nominated for the “hard work and dedication” it shows to its clients.

Ann Parry said: "We're delighted to have made it through to the final of Petplan's Veterinary Awards. It's a great feeling that such a small practice can be recognised in these prestigious awards."
