CCTV in Sedgemoor has been given a £14,000 boost for improvements thanks to the Police and Crime Commissioner.

PCC Sue Mountstevens allocated the funding through the Somerset Community Safety Partnership, which has seen a total of £98,000 marked for CCTV in Somerset.

Part of Sedgemoor's share will be spent on installing new cameras in Burnham's Manor Gardens.

Kristy Blackwell, community safety and health team leader at SDC, said: “It's fantastic news for us.

“In the Manor Gardens area we have been working with the police, town council and residents to identify and tackle issues such as vandalism.

“We have experienced continued instances of vandalism in the gardens, notably to the building there and our lighting columns.

“Although we had a camera there, it was not in a good location and the view had become obscured by a tree. We needed to relocate and improve it and now we can.”

Sedgemoor District Council currently monitors cameras in six towns - including Bridgwater, Burnham and Highbridge.

By the end of March 2013, the control room was monitoring 157 cameras, day and night, 365 days a year.

A total of £193,000 has been allocated through the Somerset Community Safety Grant for initiatives like CCTV, street pastors, domestic abuse, Dreamschemes and tackling sexual exploitation of children.
