Seafront loos open longer
SEDGEMOOR District Council has hit out at criticism about the opening hours of its seafront toilets.
The council says it actually responded over a month ago to requests to keep the toilets on the South Esplanade in Burnham open for longer during the holiday season.
A spokesman said: “The toilets have in fact been open for longer hours, until 7 pm, since the start of the school holidays (July 20).
“The toilets will continue to stay open longer for the remainder of the school holiday season. At the end of the school holidays, the opening times will be reviewed in conjunction with the weather conditions.”
The announcement follows an appeal by Burnham MP Tessa Munt for the toilets to remain open longer.
The Victoria Hotel at Burnham also hosts a community comfort scheme, based on a partnership between SDC and local businesses.
Sedgemoor pays a fee to the business, which then welcomes tourists and residents into its premises to use the facilities.
The spokesman added: “The scheme helps the Council provide better and more facilities for visitors and it helps local businesses by adding to the local economy.
“Provision of public conveniences is not a statutory duty for Sedgemoor District Council.”
