Puriton Youth Club awarded £5k
MEMBERS of Somerset Youth Parliament have allocated almost £5,000 to Puriton Youth Club.
The club has been awarded £4,950 for staff costs, rent and money towards a programme so it can start and run a weekly meeting.
Teenage members of the Somerset Youth Parliament Advisory Group were asked by Somerset County Council to allocate £49,000 in grants and spent two days of their school holidays making their decision.
Destiny Reynolds, a member of the UK Youth Parliament Advisory Group, said: “Each of the applications was reviewed by the UK Youth Parliament members to ensure that the money was put to good use.
“In the Sedgemoor area, we allocated money to two clubs, one of which was a new club in Puriton and the other was continuing support to the youth club in Cheddar.
“We felt that it was a fantastic opportunity for us to be able to support young people in the area.”
Puriton Youth Club joins 17 others in Somerset which have received a share of the £49,000 cash pot.
Cllr Frances Nicholson, cabinet member for Children and Young People, said: “The Somerset Youth Parliament Advisory Group members are very impressive and public spirited young men and women.
“They are exactly the right people to be thinking through Somerset young people’s needs and deciding on the allocation of this money among the voluntary youth clubs.”
