Highbridge Enterprise Centre plans go on-line
THE public can now cast their eye over plans for the Highbridge Enterprise Centre – reported on the front page of last week’s Weekly News.
A planning application for the jobs-creating scheme has been submitted to Sedgemoor District Council and a consultation runs until October 20.
The application, submitted by Exeter-based firm SWH Build, confirms the centre will compromise two buildings – one for industrial businesses and the other for offices – on a greenfield site next to the Household Waste Recycling Centre, off Bennett Road.
The development covers 1.3 acres, and the plans also show another area on the site earmarked for “future industrial units”.
The Weekly News reported last week how community leaders in Burnham and Highbridge believe the site could provide a massive economic boost to the area.
Highbridge county councillor John Woodman said: “It will create a feelgood factor. When people see other people being successful, they think ‘I can do the same’.”
The centre will house ten start-up businesses, who will get access to a business mentor and high-speed broadband.
The planning application submitted this week reveals the centre would create the equivalent of 40 full-time jobs.
In a supporting statement for the scheme, architects Reed and Holland said: “There is a need to encourage employment proposals that provide higher skilled and higher earning job opportunities locally, in turn reducing the attractiveness of out-commuting to other centres.
“The proposal at Highbridge can accommodate employment development and meet the needs of small growing businesses and local start ups to stimulate local enterprise and capture the talent of local entrepreneurs.”
