First Great Western retain Somerset rail franchise
11:00am Thursday 3rd October 2013 in News
FIRST Great Western trains will continue running through Somerset for another two years, it has been announced.
The Department for Transport said the company, owned by FirstGroup, would keep the franchise to run trains until September 2015.
Passengers have been told they can expect greater seating and sleeper carriage capacity, as well as an improved wi-fi connection.
The Transport Secretary, Patrick McLoughlin, said the train is ‘a lifeline’ to bring in business to areas of the South-West.
Originally, First Group had three competitors for the Great Western Lines, including Stagecoach, Arriva and National Express.
FirstGroup was left as the only commercial candidate being considered.
