Vandals target Marine Cove
VANDALS targeted Burnham’s Marine Cove Gardens in the early hours of this morning (October 28).
The raging storm was not enough to put off yobs from carrying out acts of criminal damage in the area.
The damage resulted in two light columns toppled, a stone foundation slab toppled, a Windsor Heritage lantern shattered on a standing light column and two tiers of stone flag paving torn up from the steps leading to Lion’s fountain.
Two timber benches had also been ripped from their ground fixings and thrown in the pool. The pool’s main centrepiece, a cherub, had also toppled. The Sundial had also been knocked over and the dial removed from its plinth.
Harley Cook, Parks and Open Spaces Policy Officer for Sedgemoor, said: “SDC is saddened to advise that in the early hours of this morning, around 1am, a series of acts of vandalism and criminal damage took place in Marine Cove Gardens.
“The affected area has been cordoned off by Sedgemoor staff. Estimates to ascertain the cost of the damage will need to be completed before a clear-up can take place. Some loose or damaged items have been stored by SDC for safe keeping.
“We would like to apologise to anyone unable to use the affected area of the garden during this time- such acts are beyond the council’s control.”
Sedgemoor District Council’s Parks and CCTV staff will be working closely with local police and the CCTV footage has enabled the apprehension of two suspects by the police.
Anyone with information should contact Burnham Police Station on 101.
