A BURNHAM cul-de-sac is basking in the warm glow of thousands of glittering Christmas lights and the feeling of festive cheer from the families who live there.

Eight homes in Trinity Close switched on their famous display of Christmas lights on Sunday to be enjoyed by crowds of families.

More than £5,000 was raised last year and this year’s collection will go to PETAL: The Christine Woodberry Memorial Trust, Burnham’s rescue hovercraft charity BARB and Musgrove Park Hospital’s Maternity Unit Trust Fund.

Paula Payne, who lives in the close, said: “We add new lights every year, and they are lately all LEDs to save energy. It costs us around £100 a season extra.

“We had a really good turn-out this year, the biggest we’ve ever had. I think people came from further afield too. We’d like to thank everyone for their support. The cul-de-sac has raised £45,000 altogether over the years.

“I’ve been doing it eight years. I knew what to expect when we moved here. It brings neighbours together and it’s like it was when I was young - you know your neighbours.”

Paula sets up her lights on her own over three weeks.

More than 100,000 lights are included in the display, which is open to the public from 4.20pm to 10pm each day until January 5.

Entertainment was provided by local singing group Curtain Call and the crowd enjoyed a host of festive treats, from mince pies to warming drinks.
