Breakfast event for Burnham businesses
10:00am Tuesday 17th December 2013 in News
BUSINESS leaders in Burnham had a chance to share concerns and ideas with MP Tessa Munt at a breakfast meeting.
The event was organised by Burnham-on-Sea Chamber of Trade.
A key area of discussion for small and medium-sized companies is business rates, and Ms Munt has been pushing for a review of these to help ease their financial pressures.
She said: “Those who run shops in our high streets must not be penalised with high business rates but actually should be encouraged to be there.
“I have been pushing for a re-evaluation of business rates since 2010 and when appointed as Vince Cable’s Parliamentary Private Secretary this was one of the first issues I raised.
“It is brilliant that Vince is receptive to the idea. He has himself called for a shake-up and I know that discussions are ongoing about how this might be achieved. I will continue to raise this important issue in Parliament..
A Burnham Chamber of Trade spokesman said: “This is one of many events held by the chamber throughout the year to give local business a voice.
“It was a great opportunity to discuss local issues with our MP in an informal setting and we appreciate the support of those who attended. We look forward to holding more events like this in the future.”
Other discussion points on the day included the Autumn Statement delivered in Parliament the day before.
Also on the agenda were initiatives to boost trade and curbs on ‘commercial’ charity shops receiving business rate relief.
