Police are urging people to stay safe while enjoying their New Year’s Eve celebrations.

The police have offered suggestions on how to stay safe for celebrating the coming of 2014 and make sure the night is not memorable for the wrong reasons.

If you are going out, they advise you take public transport or a taxi, or if that isn't possible ask a friend to act as a designated driver.

If you decide to walk home make sure you stick to well-lit streets and avoid dark unlit alleyways, and avoid walking home alone if possible.

It’s also good idea to arrange a lift with a friend or family member beforehand or pre-book with a licensed taxi company. Never use an unlicensed minicab.

Finally if you decide to drink this evening, give yourself enough time to sober up tomorrow before driving as even a small amount of alcohol can affect your ability to drive safely.
