A MEMORIAL service was held by the Frank Foley statue in Highbridge to mark World Holocaust Day on Monday – the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.
The service, attended by more than 20 people, was led by the Rev Sharon Crossman from St John’s Church, Highbridge.
The Frank Foley statue was erected nine years ago to commemorate the Highbridge-born British secret service officer who helped more than 10,000 Jews escape Nazi Germany.
On May 8, 2005, the Frank Foley statue was officially unveiled after five years of fundraising by members of the Highbridge War Memorial Trust.
Derek Cooper, chairman of the trust, which also organises the memorial service, said: “The weather was very bad but we still had a gentleman coming all the way from Bath for the service.”
“We said some prayers for those who died in the Holocaust and prayers to hope it never happens again and see that people treat other people with respect.”
At the service, wreaths were laid at the base of the statue by Burnham and Highbridge Mayor Martin Cox and chairman of Sedgemoor District Council Cllr Peter Downing.
