TWO sisters from Burnham are preparing for a gruelling 450km bike ride in China to raise cash for three charities.

Jessica and Melissa Vearncombe are taking part in the Action for Charity bike ride in September, raising cash for Breast Cancer Care, Ovarian Cancer Action and Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust.

The pair must raise and submit a minimum of £6,400 between them by June 27 to enter the charity event.

Jessica, 25 from East Huntspill, told the Weekly News: “We lost our granddad to cancer in March 2013 and I lost a colleague to cancer so this is something which has touched both of us.

“Our friends and colleagues have been supportive and we’ve held a few events so far. We’ve raised around £1,000 already.”

The girls have been training hard for the event by cycling, doing strength workouts and are starting a spinning class soon.

Jessica added: “We’ve got plenty of events coming up and we’re hoping two shows will raise around £4,000.

“We each need to raise £3,200 for the event, with about £1,400 of that paying to take part. But overall we’re trying to get as much as possible for these great charities.”

o UPCOMING events include a coffee morning and cake sale at Pawlett British Legion on Saturday from 10.30am, a Blues Brothers Tribute night at Weston Pier on April 26 and a DreamMen night at the Winter Gardens on May 9.
