RESIDENTS along the West and North Somerset coast are being asked to remain flood aware in light of high tides, a yellow warning of rain for Somerset from the Met Office, and new flood alerts from the Environment Agency.

With two severe flood warnings, 28 flood warnings, and 30 flood alerts still in place across the South West region, the following Somerset coastal locations are expected to be affected tonight (Sunday March 2):

Minehead’s seafront – the coastline between Quay West and The Warren, including seafront properties on Culvercliffe Court, Quay West and Quay Street

• The seafront and chalet area at Dunster’s beaches, between The Warren and Sea Lane End

• The coastal strip at Blue Anchor, in between Minehead and Watchet, between Sea Lane End and the Blue Anchor Hotel. Includes the Blue Anchor chalets, The Smugglers Hotel and other low-lying properties on the seafront

• The coastline between Berrow and Brean Down, including properties along the seafront, at Brean Down Cove and Brean Down Farm Somerset coast

Similarly, flood warnings issued afresh yesterday (Saturday March 1), remain in place:

Porlock Weir – the coastline between Gore Point and Hurlstone Point. Includes properties on the lockside, businesses around the Harbour Masters office, Gibraltar Cottages and other low lying properties on the B3225 at Porlock Weir

• Low-lying areas surrounding the tidal River Parrett at Bridgwater’s Manley Gardens and East Quay

The two severe flood warnings for the South West remain in force for East Lyng, Burrowbridge, West Yeo, Moorland and Fordgate on the Moors, and on the A361 between East Lyng and Burrowbridge.

Somerset County Council said: “At present the levels forecast are expected to be lower than the tides earlier this year.

“We are keeping a very close eye on weather patterns for Sunday and Monday in particular, when the tides reach their highest points.

“We will be working over the weekend to keep analysing the highest tides alongside the most up to date weather conditions so that we are well informed about the possible impact.”

Temporary defences have been set up as a precaution at the Blake Gardens in Bridgwater, and in Burrowbridge.

Blake Gardens has already been subject to tidal flooding today (Sunday).

The next community update from Somerset County Council (SCC) is expected tomorrow Monday, March 3.
