BURNHAM and Highbridge Youth Council members enjoyed a visit to the town council chambers.

Katie Lawson, a councillor for Burnham and Highbridge, told them about the history of the offices and invited them to sit at the chambers to feel what it is like to be a councillor.

The youth council has received funding from Somerset County Council to run for another year, supported by Andrea White, project worker from the Somerset Rural Youth Project, Cllr Lawson and volunteer Jonathan Smith.

Jonathan said: “The youth council members have started up a drop in youth club called The Zone and are working on their next projects to include the repainting of the café area and an art project at The Bay Centre.

“They will also be involved in the youth day and the folk music event.”

Jonathan has secured funding from 02 which will help with event costs. The Zone youth club has also been given funding to continue for a year.

Andrea White, SRYP youth and community project worker, said: “The support that we have from the town council, Kate Lawson, Jonathan and the young people has been amazing.

“This is the first time that I have worked in this area and the community spirit is uplifting; everyone gives as much as they can. I am really looking forward to all the work we will be doing.” Burnham and Highbridge Youth Council will now meet on Mondays, from 3.30pm-5.30pm at The Bay Centre.
