AN eight-year-old Burnham girl and her mum battled against the raging winds and pounding rain to complete a 5km race for cancer research.

Harriet Jones, who goes to St Andrew’s School in Burnham, completed the Weston Race for Life, running alongside her mum Nicky Phillips.

Footballing-mad Harriet plays for Burnbridge Wanderers JFC in Burnham so she was fit enough to keep up with her mum right until the end.

The weather was so bad on the day that the athletic mother and daughter combo were nearly forced to end their race prematurely.

Nicky said: “The weather was so bad that the organisers had to re-route the race off the beach and onto the promenade at the last minute.

“It was a difficult run with the conditions so poor but we managed to finish within 38 minutes.”

The duo were raising money for the largest woman-only fundraising campaign Race for Life, which raises money to combat breast cancer in the UK.

Nicky, an estate agent, said: “It was Harriet’s first Race for Life and she found it challenging but loved the ice cream at the finish line.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who donated to our Just Giving Page, and a special thank you to Wilkie May and Tuckwood for their generous donation of £100.”
