A HERITAGE trail and online archive designed to make the history of Burnham come alive to visitors will be launched on Saturday.

A day of activities will take place to mark the opening of Capture Burnham and a new heritage trail map will encourage young and old to explore the town’s fascinating past.

Free activities and refreshments for all the family are on offer from 11am-3pm.

And in true historic tradition, the town crier will herald the new trail.

Local residents and visitors are encouraged to bring their memories and treasures to the event to be captured in film, audio or photos.

North Sedgemoor Local History Group has organised the event to help people contribute to create a living history.

Professional photographer Richard Tomlinson will be taking portraits of individuals and families on Saturday and he hopes they will bring objects that show their connection to Burnham.

Somerset Skills and Learning marketing manager Adrian Bowen will be leading a drawing working using the Low Lighthouse as a subject, while the team from Somerset Film will be leading an animation activity.

They will help people go online to explore the website, upload their photos and leave their memories.

As well as an exhibition of photographs and other documents there will be screenings of the Norman Gobey archive of Burnham, in the 1930s.

The project has been supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Burnham and Highbridge Town Council.

Co-ordinator John Strickland says it will also be a day to thank everyone involved and to celebrate their efforts.

He said: “So many people have given their time to this project, from those who helped in deciding the trail content and in obtaining the necessary permissions.

“Not forgetting those people who provided the images and information contained within the new leaflet and those who have already recorded their memories for posterity.”
