ASDA has been given the go-ahead to refurbish its supermarket in Highbridge.

The chain has won planning permission from Sedgemoor District Council for a mezzanine floor at its store in Caxton Road, to make space for a bigger George clothing department and a cafeteria.

The store will remain open during the refurbishment which will take place out of store hours over several months at a date to be decided.

Bob Filmer, chairman of Sedgemoor District Council's development committee, said: “The plan has been there for some time now but we were waiting on legal reasons to confirm an agreement.

“The store expressed that they wanted to expand the ranges that they sell by building a second floor.

“They have shown with the amount of people who shop there that there is a need for expansion and have carried out various surveys before bringing the plans to us.”

Hundreds of people attended a public consultation on the plans in February and dozens left comments.

Alan Jones, Asda's estates town planning manager, said: “We'd like to thank everyone who took the time to provide feedback. Their comments showed overwhelming support for what we want to do. Their input was invaluable.”
