AFTER 119 years offering drink, entertainment and a place to socialise, one of Burnham’s oldest clubs was set to close its doors.


Staff at the Burnham Institute, Regent Street, called ‘last orders’ at the end of August after suffering from the economic downturn.


o A SEDGEMOOR woman branded a surprise letter informing here that she had won £4million the ‘biggest con since Father Christmas’.


Pensioner Betty Langmead, of West Street, Bridgwater, said she wanted to warn vulnerable people to beware of similar scams which ask for credit cards details.

RUSTY and ugly World War Two beach defences at Brean were set to be removed after villagers won their three-year battle to consign them to history.


The concrete structures once served an honourable role in keeping our local beach safe and preventing enemy gliders from landing on the sands.


PRIME Minister Tony Blair was being asked to come to the rescue of the Burnham area’s buses, after more than 1,000 people signed up to a petition opposing service cuts.


Somerset County Council controversially slashed its public transport funding and the result has been a number of key buses being taken out of service.

RESIDENTS at Berrow’s Little Court were set to enjoy some home-from-home style luxuries – thanks to the fund-raising efforts of staff and supporters.


Barry Searle, 43, a nurse at Little Court, cycled an impressive 99 miles around Somerset and Devon to raise £800 for the residential unit.

 

A FORMER King Alfred’s School student made academic history for the Highbridge-based school.
Nick Deahl, 18, won a place at Oxford University – which was thought to be a first for King Alfred’s.
Nick studied at the school for five years, achieving eight A grades at GCSE level.
