A TEACHER on her way to work with a charity helping Kenyan schools held a fundraising event at a pub in Highbridge at the weekend.
Lauren McKenna, 24, organised the day of fun at the Coopers Arms to raise money for Hands Up for Action, a charity which helps to inspire young, vulnerable children in Kenya to move into and complete formal education successfully.
The day featured a raffle and live music with face painting and a bouncy castle to entertain the children.
Lauren, who has just completed her NQT in primary school teaching, said: “It was a really good day. I can’t wait to get over there now – it still doesn’t feel quite real that I’ll be going to Nairobi.”
Lauren will be leaving for Kenya on November 6 and will return just before Christmas with the money raised helping children at the school where Lauren will be volunteering.
Lauren said: “We managed to raise £277 which will go toward helping out at the school in Nairobi and I just want to say a big thank you to everyone who helped, especially the Burnham Excellent Entertainment Society, Alys and John, who performed a great acoustic set, Momentum, and obviously Ian and Sharon for letting us have the day at the Cooper’s Arms.”
