A FIELD of poppies is planned in Burnham as a striking and heartfelt tribute to the people who lost their lives in major conflicts.

As a build-up to the Remembrance Day service in Burnham, silk poppies are being sold to the public which will then be planted in Manor Gardens to create a scarlet field of floral war tributes.

More than 100 poppies were bought at the last farmers’ market in the town and they will also be available at the next market on October 31 and in Burnham’s supermarkets from October 23.

They will then be planted at a special event at Manor Gardens on Sunday, October 26, at 2.30pm.

Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge youth theatre events secretary Gaynor Brown told the Weekly News: “I would love to see 1,000 poppies planted in the field as I think that would look really special – that’s our target.

“We have sold just over 100 so far but there are plenty of other opportunities for people to buy one over the next few weeks. They are doing a similar poppy appeal at the Tower of London where ceramic poppies are being planted in a moat.

“We are trying to recreate this idea for Burnham but on a smaller scale but it could still look very effective.”

In London the aim is for 888,246 ceramic poppies to progressively fill the famous moat at the Tower in an installation entitled ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’ to mark the centenary since the outbreak of the First World War.
