THE first part of a new bridge over the River Tone and the Bridgwater to Taunton Canal was lifted into place this week.

The 42-metre long, 50-tonne beam is part of the £22million Northern Inner Distributor Road linking Staplegrove Road to Priory Avenue, in Taunton.

The other end of the bridge will be positioned next week before the centre span is lowered into place.

The newest development comes a year after the official turf cutting ceremony.

It is hoped the NIDR will be completed by next summer and will lead to the creation of 6,000 jobs in shops and other employment opportunities, boosting the town's economy.
