A FATHER of three’s job as a firefighter could have led to the disease that claimed his life, an inquest heard.
David Roger Burt, 69, of Berrow Road, Burnham, died from malignant mesothelioma after coming into contact with asbestos when he worked for Somerset Fire Brigade and during his time as a carpenter and joiner for a private firm.
His daughter, Sally-Anne Peacock, told the hearing her father often returned home with dust on his clothes, hair, face and skin.
West Somerset Coroner Michael Rose concluded that Mr Burt died at home on January 5 from the industrial disease malignant mesothelioma, with the medical cause pneumonia due to the disease.
Mr Rose said dangers associated with inhaling asbestos were known before the First World War but precautions were not taken until the 1970s.
