A NURSE from Weare is going to great heights in memory of his late wife.

Colin Weare plans to climb six Somerset hills in one day to raise funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

Colin, 47, who will be joined by six colleagues from Musgrove Hospital’s A&E department, lost his wife, Lynsey, to the disease last year.

He said one of the six hills will be especially poignant as it includes Crook Peak where the couple, who were married for 14 years, first held hands.

Speaking to the Weekly News, Colin, who now lives in Bridgwater, said: “Lynsey and I went walking up Crook Peak and on the way down she stumbled so I put my hand out to catch her and that was the first time we ever held hands.

“I’m looking forward to the whole challenge but that peak will be a special one and may make me a bit teary-eyed as we’re coming down.”

The six peaks are known as the Somerset 360’s because they each have uninterrupted views all the way round.

They include Glastonbury Tor, Burrow Mump, Lollover Hill, Crook Peak, Brean Down and Brent Knoll.

But wheras most people scale them over a long period, Colin and his team aim to complete the task in twenty-four hours.

“After Lynsey died I decided to take on a challenge and originally intended to do the three peaks.

“It was actually a colleague who suggested we do the Somerset 360°s and I thought it was a great idea.”

The team will travel between each peak by minibus. Experienced hill climber Colin said he and the rest of the team were feeling confident about the challenge.

“We’re all really looking forward to it,” he said.

“The minivan will hold 17 people so if everyone comes forward who has said they’ll do it we should fill it.

“I’ve never done anything like this as such but I’ve climbed most of the peaks individually so I’m confident we’ll complete the challenge.

“We’ll all be doing it together and helping each other through it so hopefully everyone will enjoy it.”

The team will start in the north of the county and work their way south.
