The former Secretary General of Nato will receive an honorary doctorate today in recognition of his distinction in public affairs.

George Robertson will be presented with the honour in a special ceremony at the University of Stirling.

The Rt Hon Lord Robertson of Port Ellen , born on Islay, was elected as Labour MP for Hamilton in 1978 and remained in the House of Commons until 1999.

He was appointed Defence Secretary after the 1997 General Election.

In August 1999 he was selected to be the tenth Secretary General of NATO and held that post until December 2003, when he received a life peerage.

He is one of a number of distinguished figures from the worlds of sport, art, politics and business who will be honoured at two Scottish universities today.

At Stirling, Richard Demarco CBE will receive an honorary doctorate in recognition of his contribution to the arts in Scotland.

Professor Demarco is a painter who co-founded Edinburgh's Traverse Theatre in 1963 and also opened his own gallery in the city.

BAFTA winning photographer Doug Allan will receive a doctorate for his contribution to wildlife and polar photography.

The Stirling university graduate has been involved with projects such as the BBC's Blue Planet series and has won awards including two Emmys and three BAFTAs.

Also receiving doctorates are poet Adrienne Rich, education and lifelong learning expert Dr Jarl Bengtsson and businessman Hugh Boyle who founded Direct Holidays and Zoom airlines.

The University of Aberdeen will also hand out awards today, presenting honours to three leading Scottish figures.

David Carry, a Commonwealth and European swimming champion, will receive the honorary degree of Master of the University.

Businessman David Craig, Chairman of the family-run Craig Group, a global shipping and energy service firm, will be presented with a doctorate.

Screenwriter and film-producer Allan Schiach, from Elgin, will also receive an honorary doctorate.
