THE decision not to prosecute Lord Janner for alleged child sexual abuse has been branded “utterly disgraceful” by Liberal Democrat politician Tessa Munt.

Ms Munt, who is standing for re-election for the Wells Constituency has joined a group of cross party politicians who are calling on Director of Public Prosecutions Alison Saunders to reverse the decision.

The former Labour peer who suffers from dementia, was deemed by the Crown Prosecution Service to be too unwell to stand trial which caused anger from his alleged victims.

According to Ms Munt, who will be hoping to represent Burnham following the general election, the decision shows people that the establishment is set up to protect those in higher levels.

“It’s just another example of how people in high places seem to be given protection,” she said.

“Clearly there was evidence in 1991 and he should have been convicted then.

“I just think this is utterly disgraceful.” Ms Munt along with 10 other senior politicians co-signed a letter which was published in the Times saying the decision not to prosecute the 86-year-old was “damaging to public confidence”.

Since the decision Lord Greville Janner has requested a leave of absence from the House of Lords and has been suspended by the Labour Party.

However Ms Munt says that despite the CPS confirming that there is enough evidence to charge the former Leicester West MP with 22 sex offences she is not optimistic that anything will be done.

She said: “I wouldn’t say I’m optimistic but I’m hopeful that something will be done. “This is one of the reasons why I’m keen to have another go this time around – I’ve started something and believe me I will jump up and down until something is done about it if I get back in.

“This stuff has to stop. “I think it just reinforces what everyone suspects about the establishment. “The police, the health service the whole system was clearly directed to protect people in senior levels in the establishment.

“That’s why you need ordinary people in Parliament. “They can make sure that they can stop this happening – it’s just totally unjust.”
