A ROAD on the Somerset Levels has claimed another victim after a blue Renault car ended up in the ditch near Brent Knoll this week.

Over the last few days four vehicles in total have left Harp Road, which links Brent Knoll on the A38 to Mark, with two cars leaving the twisting lane in the same stretch near the a very sharp bend.

The road has deep ditches and rhynes along some of its length, and has little in the way of verges or pavements on either side.

At the time of going to press the car was still in the ditch with a police cordon around it, despite it having crashed at the weekend.

A second car was removed from a reed -illed ditch nearby having ended up on its roof on the evening of August 19.

Debris from the incident was left scattered at the scene, with the Fire and Rescue Service helping to rescue the young couple from the car, although the ambulance service said that there were no serious injuries.

Last week another car came to grief along the same road.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue service said that their crews from Burnham-on-Sea and Glastonbury attended the incidents.

The four car crashes in such close succession have raised questions about the speed limit on the road, which as a single carriageway is 60mph.

A spokesman for South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust said: “The Trust is urging drivers to slow down and take care on the roads, especially if you are a visitor to the area and are unfamiliar with the region.

"It may also be worth keeping an eye on the weather conditions and planning your trip accordingly.”
