An activist group have said they won't target any of the Somerset carnivals, after they stood down from protesting at Bridgwater Carnival.

New Fathers 4 Justice had previously claimed they would demonstrate at Bridgwater and other Somerset carnivals if there are any suffragette themed entries.

The group said fathers deserve equal rights after family breakdown as much as women do in the workplace and are known for their high profile demonstrations. They also said they were banned from taking part in carnivals for being too political.

However, in a statement, the group said organisers had kept their word, and there was no need for them to protest.

They said: "We were happy that Bridgwater Carnival organisers had kept their word that there would be not any entries at this year's carnival likely to cause offence.

"We placed a spotter on Broadway and other activists remained ready in the Cornhill area ready to physically disrupt any political themed floats.

"We will now not target any of this years remaining carnivals "The Ramblers Gotham Gang villains may have been on a float but Clifton Suspension Bridge and Buckingham Palace Batman Jason Hatch was hiding in the Cornhill Pub window!

"Big well done to all involved in organising the event."
