A SEVERE weather warning has been issued for the south west amid forecasts of winds up to 70mph on the western coast this weekend.

The Met Office is forecasting the strong winds - with gusts of up to 55mph inland - between 9am on Saturdya moning and 6pm on Sunday.

A forecaster said: "Gusts around coastlines exposed to the westerly or southwesterly winds could reach 60mph at times.

"Inland gusts will be less frequent but could still reach 50 to 55mph.

"Further strengthening from the west is expected on Sunday where gusts around western coasts could locally reach 70mph.

"Elsewhere, gusts of 60mph are possible, particularly in western areas. Please be aware of the potential for some disruption due to the strong winds."

This weekend will see a raft of events taking place across the county, including the Christmas lights event in Taunton on Sunday evening, while Bridgwater's Christmas lights are being switched on this evening.
